Breakell Racing have made a brilliant start to their second season in the Porsche Sprint Challenge GB, securing a sensational haul of nine class podium finishes from the opening six races of the campaign.
The Lancashire team have expanded to a two-car entry for the 2024 campaign, with Reece Somerfield returning for his second season behind the wheel of a brand-new Porsche Cayman GT4 RS and Karim Sekkat making his debut in the existing Clubsport model.
The long-awaited season opener came at Snetterton last month (25/26 May), kicking off a campaign in which the Sprint Challenge GB will once again race exclusively on the biggest race package in the UK alongside the British Touring Car Championship.
Somerfield and Sekkat excelled in a range of weather conditions as sporadic storms hit Norfolk, with a near-perfect weekend seeing both of them come away with three podium finishes from three races. Their combined efforts also saw the team secure their first class wins in the championship.
It was Somerfield who secured the maiden victory as he stormed through from fourth on the RS Am class grid to take top spot in race one. Next time out it was Sekkat’s turn to take to the top step of the podium as he controlled the CS Am class, before Somerfield doubled his tally in the last race.
Following on from that dream start to the season for the Clitheroe-based squad, the podium success continued this past weekend (22/23 June) at Oulton Park. Under glorious sunshine, Sekkat was the first to climb onto the rostrum as he battled to third in race two of the event.
After a pair of fourth place finishes, Somerfield signed off his weekend with a return to the podium in third. The brilliant start to the season means that both of the Breakell Racing drivers sit just two points off their class championship leads heading into the next three races at Croft (27/28 July).
James Breakell - Team Principal: “We’re absolutely over the moon with how the Porsche Sprint Challenge GB season has started. To get our first wins in Porsche racing is a massive moment for the team and I’m hugely proud of everyone involved.
“Reece has done a fantastic job considering he received his new RS only a couple of weeks before the first round, while we’re hugely impressed with how Karim has adapted to the Cayman. For them to share nine podium finishes so far is brilliant and there’s much more to come.”
